AFT Selects DPCI to Implement WoodWing's SmartConnection

Detroit, MI - April 24, 2005 - WoodWing USA proudly announces that the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) has selected SmartConnection Enterprise as its editorial production system. With 1.3 million members across the country, AFT publishes five high-quality publications to keep its various membership groups informed and up-to-date.

AFT required a powerful and versatile package of editorial solutions to help produce those publications, and WoodWing Software was able to fit those needs.

Working with DPCI, the leading WoodWing partner in the United States, AFT decided to install a suite of WoodWing solutions that included Smart Connection Enterprise, Smart Layout and Smart Styles.

AFT needed a publishing system that would allow staffers to track editorial projects and revisions, while at the same time allowing for seamless interaction between editors and designers. Smart Connection Enterprise was the perfect fit.

Before integrating WoodWings products, a folder system was used to move projects through the workflow. The editors were using a word processor that had no connection to the page-layout program, and after copy was flowed on to a page, the editors no longer had the ability to make changes on the screen. All of that work had to be done on paper and shipped nightly to a typesetter who made the corrections.

WoodWing USA CEO Brian Kruger was pleased with how well the deal with AFT came together. DPCI did a great job of analyzing their needs and then implementing the right solution, Kruger said. The publications that AFT produces are all first-rate, and were confident that our editorial solutions will be exactly what they need.

To meet the needs of its various membership groups, the AFT produces five high-quality publications:

  • American Teacher, which serve AFTs teacher membership.
  • Healthwire, a publication for nurses and other health-care professionals.
  • On Campus, for higher education faculty and staff.
  • Public Employee Advocate, for local, state and federal employees.
  • PSRP Reporter, for paraprofessionals and other school-related personnel.

The American Federation of Teachers (AFT) was founded in 1916 to represent the interests of classroom teachers. The union has grown through the years to represent other groups of workers, including paraprofessionals and school-related personnel; local, state and federal employees; higher education faculty and staff; and nurses and other health-care professionals. In addition, the union includes more than 170,000 retiree members.
